Water is the element that mainly characterizes Venice and the Historic Regatta, one of the most spectacular festivities of the city, takes place along the city’s biggest water way: the Gran Canal.
The historic procession formed mainly by fifteenth century boats is led by the Bucintoro, the boat that represent the Serenissima.
The Regata Storica recalls the brave acceptance by Caterina Cornaro, spouse of the King of Cyprus, in 1489 to renounce the throne in favor of Venice.
After the historic procession multicolor boats with dressed up gondoliers follow transporting the Doge and the Dogaressa, Caterina Cornaro, and all the highest authorities of the Venetian Magistracy, in a faithful reconstruction of the glorious past of one of the most powerful and influential Republic.
The spectators, on board boats moored along the river or comfortably seated on the floating galleries, participate passionately, with scream of encouragement towards the favorites of the race.
The fundamental stages of the historical regatta have always been the “spagheto” or “cordin”, the thread of departure at the Giardini; the “paleto”, a fix pole in the middle of the Grand Canal around which the boats turn and where one can determine quite precisely the outcome of the race; the “machina”, a floating gallery built on a barge rich with multicolor and golden carvings, place of the arrival and award.
